從古至今除了太陽，月亮可說是影響人類文明最重要的星體。古往今來許多文人皆以月亮為題抒發情感。從「月宮嫦娥」的上古傳說，到《詩經》「月出皎兮」以月光比喻所愛之人的美，再到李白《靜夜思》，因獨自仰望一輪皓月，思鄉之情油然而生。
月亮是古代照亮夜空的重要光源，月相的圓缺變化更讓祖先衍生月份概念。月亮似乎有種魔力，會激發人類研究宇宙的好奇心。400年前義大利天文學家伽利略正是用他改良的20倍率望遠鏡來觀察月亮與星空，並把觀測紀錄寫成《星際信使》，不但揭開月亮與宇宙奧秘，為現代天文觀測與望遠鏡改良奠下基礎，也因而享有現代天文學之父的美名。

In 1609, using this early version of the telescope, Galileo became the first person to record observations of the sky made with the help of a telescope. He soon made his first astronomical discovery. At the time, most scientists believed that the Moon was a smooth sphere, but Galileo discovered that the Moon has mountains, pits, and other features, just like the Earth.
1609年時，伽利略用他改良的望遠鏡成首位紀錄星空觀測之人。很快地他也在天文觀測上有重要發現。當時許多科學家認為月亮是光滑的星球，可是伽利略觀察到月球表面有山有谷，就跟地球一樣。

1969年7月20日，美國太空人阿姆斯壯與艾德林成為第一批踏上月球的太空人。著白色太空服、戴頭盔的阿姆斯壯出現在艙舷梯，踏上月球表面時，說出一句日後讓大家耳熟能詳的話：「這是我的一小步，卻是人類的一大步。」

今（2018）年9 月中旬，由特斯拉執行長的馬斯克（Elon Musk）創立的美國太空探索科技公司，跨出人類的另一大步。他宣布世界第一位參與繞月旅行的遊客，由來自日本的億萬富翁搶到頭香。這是自1970年代阿波羅計畫結束後，近 50年來首度有人類前往月球。
