塑膠製品帶來的垃圾汙染一直是所有人頭疼的議題。我們隨處可見的垃圾袋、免洗餐具（disposable tableware）、寶特瓶（PET Bottles）、吸管（straw）等等大多是不易分解，且分解過程可達數百年，對環境和生態造成嚴重破壞。
這個可怕的塑膠汙染（plastic pollution）當中，最令科學家與環保人士擔憂的是那些直徑小於五毫米的塑膠碎片，也就是微塑膠（microplastics），由於體積極小難以被汙水處理廠過濾，遍布於海洋、水、土壤。更可怕的是，這種由石油製成的產品會殘留毒性，在食物鏈（food chain）中累積，最終對人類健康與環境構成危害。
因此科學家一直在找尋因應對策，希望找到有效分解塑膠且回收再造的方法，好消息是，這個塑膠汙染的解決之道在2018 年4 月有了曙光。研究報告說，美國與英國的研究人員無心插柳柳成蔭，開發出一種可以分解塑膠的酵素（enzyme），名為「PETase」，有望在未來成為解決塑膠汙染的地球救星。

目前被回收再利用的塑膠瓶也只能改製成纖維，做成衣物或地毯。新研發出來的酵素，則有望賦予塑膠製品第二次生命，所以我們無需一直消耗新能源。麥基漢教授指出:「我們希望能夠運用這種酵素，將塑膠品轉變回原來的（化學）成分，把塑膠製品再製成新的塑膠製品。這代表我們不再需要開挖更多的石油，也能夠減少塑膠的總量。」
