「事假」在英文中指「個人假」personal days，病假則稱「sick days」。
美國企業的假日傳統上分為數種：國定假日「holidays」、休假「vacation」、病假「sick days」、事假「personal days」，然而近年來把假期簡化，出現PTO（paid time off 或personal time off）這個新詞，即把病假、事假一起計算，有的公司把休假也一起算入PTO，以簡化人事處理。這些假日都支薪。
請假較長的稱為「leave」，如產假「maternity leave」，家事假「family/domestic leave」，支薪或不支薪各公司不同。除此之外，如大學教授被請去做國防部長，執法失當的警察被調查以致暫時回家休息，都會採用留職停薪「leave of absence」。經濟不好，很多員工才發現，有一種假叫做無薪假「furlough」，即公司可合法要求你不上班，不支薪，以節省公司開支。
