「新手」有幾個很常出現但是意義略為不同的英文字。常在美國影片或比賽裡聽到的rookie一字，雖可當成新手來用，實際意義卻更接近軍隊中或者球隊裡的「菜鳥」。如果是在商業職場的環境裡，要說我是新手、新來的，一般直接說「I am new here.」
在網上逛論壇打電動的時候，因為不是什麼太正式的場合，大家會比較輕鬆地用有點戲謔意味的: newbie。但在文章或官方的介紹中，想要正式一點的話，novice/newcomer會更合適。novice一詞最為中性，newcomer同時還有點「後起之秀」的意思，是對新手更尊敬一些的用法。
