在目前的電影世界中,美國最擅長動作(action)、科幻(sci-fi)、冒險(adventure)、奇幻(fantasy)、警匪(crime)、動畫(animation)等類型,文藝片已經很少見,而以賺人熱淚(tearjerker),渲染情感(pathos-filled)為主的文藝片,已由亞洲獨挑大樑。

早期香港電影「梁山伯與祝英台」、南韓電視劇「冬季戀歌」,到2012年印度電影「請求」,全都是能讓女性哭溼手帕的文藝大悲劇,內容都和愛情、親情的曲折多舛,人性的極善良或極悲劣,以及重病或車禍有關。「melodrama」雖然並不必然指悲劇,但打悲苦牌、賺人熱淚的電影或戲劇確是melodrama的大宗。

講到「哭」,讓人聯想到另一個字「tragedy」。「tragedy」比「melodrama」層次高,也並不盡然會讓人掉眼淚,通常是由人格的缺陷、外在環境的相逼而形成的人生不幸結局,簡單的說,文學價值高的稱為「tragedy」,文學價值低的稱為「melodrama」。
