Meetup 是相遇、聚會、聯誼，用途非常廣，一兩個好友，二、三百人的相聚，都可用這個字。Meetu可以事先安排，也可是巧遇，可屬臨時性，可屬常規性。和相似詞比較，meeting是開會，太正式了，gathering或get-together更輕鬆自在，朋友相聚找樂子，用這個字正好，如果有點正式性，用meetup更佳。總之，meetup適合各種情況，是「聯誼」英文首選。
Meet 和meet up（動詞）很像，如果你和好友說，「Shall we meet tomorrow?」「Shall we meet up tomorrow?」兩者無甚區別，可是如果對象是你學校的校長，用「Shall we meet up tomorrow」就不適合，因為如前所說，meetup有聯誼的味道，天底下學生想和校長聯誼的情況應該不多。
