「beat around / about the bush」直譯揮打樹叢,這個拿來形容拐彎抹角的奇特片語,最早出現在1440年的一段英國手抄詩集文獻裡。在現今還被廣泛使用的片語中, 算是元老級別的了。片語的起源是,獵人在捕鳥時,會用一根棍子揮打周邊的樹叢,鳥群驚動起來後,再用獵網把飛起來的鳥一網打盡。而此片語,就是在說拿棍子到處打樹叢,卻不去捕鳥這件事。這句話現在經常跟cut to the chase「言歸正傳;直接了當」交換使用。
