【單字解析】
跟台灣一樣，在美國大學裡，有不少學生會在課餘時間旁聽某些自己有興趣的課。如果是通過正式註冊的旁聽，稱為「audit」。這樣的課程叫「auditing courses」。這種旁聽需要付學費，但不用交作業不用考試，而且一般可以聽一學期。課程結束以後，成績單上並不會有分數，但是會出現V（visitor，訪客），標明學生的旁聽身份。
另一種為非正式的旁聽「sit-ins」，比較像是還沒選那堂課之前，跟教授私下溝通好，去聽一兩堂課。「Sit-ins」不需要交學費，當然也不用交作業或考試，但是一般也不可能讓人從開學聽到學期末。
無論是audit或者sit-in，都必須跟學校或者教授在學期開始前溝通好。雖然教授跟助教不一定認識所有學生，但是學期中如果見到陌生面孔，都會提高警覺甚至通知警衛。
