The 19th century is the age of discovery. During that time, every European country tried to sail the world for adventure and new lands. To them, Africa was not only the route to sail to Asia, but also a beautiful land with natural resources and spices.
Malawi was owned by Bantu people for hundreds of years. In 19th century, Malawi became part of the British Empire. It was not until July 6th, 1964 that Malawi declared independence. It designed its national flag to celebrate the spirit of independence. The color green on its flag shows the green nature. The color red means the blood of fighting for freedom. The black color at the top represents the African people. The rising sun with 31 rays of light stresses hope and freedom in Africa.
