全新的一系列專欄文章，我們將介紹另一種整合閱讀寫作的關鍵英語力──「重點摘述力」，分別介紹如何摘述段落的重點、全文的重點，以及與重點摘述力相關的英文閱讀或寫作技巧（包含前一系列中的轉述技巧）。
在托福網路測驗（TOEFL iBT）的閱讀及寫作測驗中，都有一部分的題目用意在測試應試者於閱讀文章段落後，是否能摘述文章的重點或觀點，可見重點摘述力在學術英文上所扮演的關鍵角色。
我們先來看看托福網路測驗中的閱讀測驗重點：learn to read及read to learn兩大類型。其中read to learn對多數的測驗者是具挑戰性的，而轉述能力及重點摘述力正是read to learn的其中兩個重要技巧。檢測重點摘述力的題目也就是所謂的「文章大意題」（prose summary），這種題目是頗具挑戰的，因為必須先瞭解文章的架構與大意，才能完整的掌握全篇主旨及重點。
考驗重點摘述能力的題型
1.以托福閱讀題為例
我們先來看看相關題目在閱讀測驗中會如何呈現：
An introductory sentence for a brief summary of the passage is provided below. Complete the summary by selecting the THREE (3) answer choices that express the most important ideas in the passage. Some sentences do not belong in the summary because they express ideas that are not presented in the passage or are minor ideas in the passage. This question is worth 2 points.
Write your answer choices in the spaces where they belong. You can write in the number of the answer choice or the whole sentence.
Answer choices
(1) Scientists had believed for centuries that meteorite activity influenced evolution on Earth.
(2) The site of the large meteorite impact at the end of the Cretaceous period was identified in 1990.
(3) There have also been large meteorite impacts on the surface of the Moon, leaving craters like Tycho.
(4) An iridium-enriched sediment layer and a large impact crater in the Yucatán provide evidence that a large meteorite struck Earth about 65 million years ago.
(5) Large meteorite impacts, such as one at the end of the Cretaceous period, can seriously affect climate, ecological niches, plants, and animals.
(6) Meteorite impacts can be advantageous for some species, which thrive, and disastrous for other species, which become extinct.

在閱讀完文章之後，這類題型會以第一句（An introductory sentence for a brief summary）強調重點摘述力，答題者必須在所提供的六個選項中，挑出三個選項來完成重點摘述。
2.以托福整合寫作題為例
類似的重點摘述亦出現在寫作測驗中的整合寫作題，這類題型需在完成聽力及閱讀後，摘述重點並依據題目要求提出自己的回應（response），例如聽力與閱讀之間的關連、相反觀點。
此類型的寫作題目如下：
Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they oppose specific points made in the reading passage.
Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage.
Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.
這類題型的關鍵字在於summarize，亦即學術英文中的重點摘述力。重點摘述通常是用來測試對原文的瞭解程度及重述其重點的能力，這亦是更深層的英文掌握能力。從上述出現在托福閱讀及寫作的兩類題目，我們亦更瞭解重點摘述力在學術英文中的重要程度。
重點摘述力的基本原則
1. 精簡及精準（Be concise and precise）：必須是以精簡卻精準的文字來摘要重點，亦即文字簡要但仍保持原意。
2. 使用自己的文字（Use one’s own words）：必須盡可能用自己的文字來表達（亦即需使用英文轉述技巧），不能從原文直接抄錄多數文字。
3. 精確地呈現文本重點與結構（Include main ideas and keep the text structure of the original）：完成後的摘述應該精確地涵蓋原文的主旨、論點及結構，若能先完成大綱筆記，更有利於掌握原文結構與重點。
4. 留意摘要的長度（Stay within appropriate length）：摘述後的長度大約是原文的1/10至1/3，依據摘述目的而定。
5. 使用符合結構的連貫詞（Use appropriate transitions）：在初步瞭解文本脈絡後，必須找出原文本的組織架構，這有利於組織摘述的順序並使用適當的連貫詞，例如原文本是比較對照（compare／contrast）、問題解決（problem／solution）、或因果（cause／effect）等文本架構關係，再於重點摘述的結構內使用適合的連貫詞。
