【單詞解析】
「survivor」意為「生還者」，既指生還，那麼那場災難必然艱苦慘烈到有若干人死亡，有幸活過來的人才能稱為「survivor」。目前世界大事中可稱為survivor的有幾件，二次大戰納粹滅絶猶太人「Holocaust survivors」，南京大屠殺「Nanking massacre survivors」，日本原子彈「nuclear bomb survivors」。比較近期的有赤棉恐怖統治「Cambodian genocide survivors」，以及波士尼亞戰爭「Bosnia war survivors」。在自然災害中，有美國的佛羅里達州颶風「Katrina survivors」，以及南亞及日本海嘯「Southeast Asia / Japan tsunami survivors」。在疾病方面，因為癌症仍被認為是致命，但仍有相當存活率的疾病，所以「cancer survivors」最常用到。
「survivor」生存能力必然很強，所以說「He is a survivor」，倒不是說他必然經過某種生死災難，而是說此人歷經滄桑，至今仍活得好好的。另一種情況也可能是讚美，指一個人在任何環境下都能生存，即很懂生存之道。如一名主婦能用各種減價券過上好日子，或某人不斷被解雇，卻每次都能找到更好的工作，這些人都是「real survivors」。
遺孀、遺族也用到「survive」這個字，可是不能用「survivor」，只能用被動式「survived by」。
